L’Unione geotermica italiana (Ugi) in ricordo di Raffele Cataldi

Con immensa tristezza, l’Unione geotermica italiana (Ugi) esprime il proprio cordoglio alla famiglia Cataldi, agli ex colleghi di Enel e all’intera comunità geotermica globale per la scomparsa del dott. Raffaele Cataldi, uno dei “grandi” che hanno contribuito all’espansione della geotermia come oggi la conosciamo in Italia e nel mondo.

Raffaele Cataldi, classe 1934, geologo e geofisico, nato nella provincia di Lecce e laureato presso l’Università di Pisa, ha percorso tutta la sua carriera nei ruoli direttivi di Enel, fino al pensionamento.

È stato fautore delle prime esplorazioni geotermiche del territorio italiano, a partire dalla Toscana, per poi proseguire nel Lazio, in Campania e in altre regioni. Ha fondato il nucleo del primo istituto di ricerca geotermica del Cnr, poi diventato Istituto internazionale di ricerche geotermiche; contemporaneamente, si è fatto promotore, in Enel, di un Centro di ricerca geotermica (Crg). Mediante le attività di questi due laboratori, le metodologie di ricerca, esplorazione e coltivazione dei campi geotermici sono state organizzate con rigorosi criteri scientifici.

Figura di riferimento conosciuta e riconosciuta a livello internazionale per oltre sessant’anni di attività nel settore, il dott. Cataldi è stato un instancabile promotore della geotermia, non solo dal punto di vista tecnico-scientifico, ma anche storico, sociale e culturale. Profondo conoscitore dell’evoluzione dell’uso del calore della Terra, dagli albori dell’umanità fino alle più moderne applicazioni, ha sempre affrontato il tema con rigore, passione e obiettività, evidenziando benefici, potenzialità e criticità con grande serietà e trasparenza. Sostenitore carismatico dello sviluppo delle tecnologie per lo sfruttamento delle risorse non convenzionali, ha contribuito in modo determinante all’evoluzione scientifica e industriale del settore.

Durante la sua lunga carriera, ha ricoperto importanti incarichi: è stato consulente del governo italiano, delle Nazioni Unite, dell'Unione europea, ed è autore di centinaia di articoli e di numerosi libri scientifici e divulgativi, destinati sia al pubblico sia alle scuole. I suoi lavori, in particolare quelli realizzati insieme a Muffler alla fine degli anni ’70, rappresentano delle pietre miliari della storia geotermica internazionale e restano ancora oggi letture imprescindibili per chiunque si occupi di energia geotermica. 

Ha partecipato alla nascita dell’International geothermal association (1989, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina), dopo essere stato tra i membri del primo board internazionale del Geothermal resources council, e ne è stato uno dei promotori più attivi. Fondatore nel 2001 e membro del primo Consiglio direttivo dell’Ugi, ha ricoperto nel tempo vari ruoli istituzionali, fino a esserne nominato presidente onorario. Attivo nell’associazione per oltre vent’anni, è stato una risorsa insostituibile, contribuendo con straordinaria dedizione e costanza a ogni aspetto della vita associativa, sempre con quell’energia, passione e spirito di iniziativa che lo hanno contraddistinto e che amava trasmettere anche ai più giovani. 

Vincitore di premi e riconoscimenti da parte delle maggiori associazioni geotermiche mondiali, nel 2015 ha ricevuto una speciale menzione alla carriera dalla stessa Iga, in occasione del venticinquesimo anniversario della sua fondazione. 

Il dott. Cataldi è ricordato con profonda stima e affetto da amici e colleghi, non solo per la sua eccezionale professionalità e cultura, ma anche per l’umanità e la generosità con cui ha saputo mettersi al servizio degli altri, sempre pronto ad ascoltare, consigliare e dialogare con chiunque gli chiedesse anche solo un’opinione o uno scambio di idee. Il suo esempio, la sua visione lungimirante, il suo spirito sincero, appassionato e disinteressato continueranno ad accompagnare e ispirare la comunità geotermica italiana e internazionale, guidandola con quella stessa forza con cui lui ha saputo farlo per più di mezzo secolo.

In memory of Raffaele Cataldi

It is with immense sadness that the Italian Geothermal Union expresses its condolences to the Cataldi family, former Enel colleagues, and the entire global geothermal community for the passing of dr. Raffaele Cataldi, one of the greats who contributed to the expansion of geothermal energy as we know it today in Italy and around the world.

Raffaele Cataldi, a geologist and geophysicist, born in 1934 in the province of Lecce and graduated from the University of Pisa, spent his entire career in management roles at Enel, until his retirement.

He was a proponent of the first geothermal explorations in Italy, starting in Tuscany and then continuing in Lazio, Campania and other regions. He founded the core of the Cnr's first geothermal research institute, which later became the Istituto internazionale di ricerche geotermiche (International geothermal research institute); at the same time, he promoted a Geothermal research centre (Crg) within Enel. Through the activities of these two laboratories, the methods of research, exploration and cultivation of geothermal fields were organised according to strict scientific criteria.

A well-known and internationally recognised figure of reference for more than sixty years of activity in the sector, dr. Cataldi has been a tireless promoter of geothermal energy, not only from a technical-scientific point of view, but also from a historical, social and cultural one.

A profound connoisseur of the evolution of the use of the Earth's heat, from the dawn of mankind to the most modern applications, he has always tackled the subject with rigour, passion and objectivity, highlighting benefits, potential and criticalities with great seriousness and transparency. A charismatic advocate of the development of technologies for the exploitation of unconventional resources, he has contributed decisively to the scientific and industrial evolution of the sector.

During his long career, he has held important positions: he has been a consultant to the Italian government, the United Nations, and the European Union, and is the author of hundreds of articles and numerous scientific and popular books, intended for both the public and schools. His works, particularly those produced together with Muffler at the end of the 1970s, represent milestones in international geothermal history and remain essential reading for anyone dealing with geothermal energy.

He participated in the birth of the International geothermal association (1989, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina), after having been among the members of the first international board of the Geothermal resources council, and was one of its most active promoters. A founder in 2001 and member of the Ugi's first Board of directors, he held various institutional roles over time, until being appointed honorary president. Active in the association for more than twenty years, he was an irreplaceable resource, contributing with extraordinary dedication and constancy to every aspect of the association's life, always with that energy, passion and spirit of initiative that distinguished him and that he loved to pass on to younger members.

Winner of prizes and awards from the world's leading geothermal associations, in 2015 he received a special lifetime achievement award from the Iga itself, on the 25th anniversary of its foundation.

Dr. Cataldi is remembered with profound esteem and affection by friends and colleagues, not only for his exceptional professionalism and culture, but also for the humanity and generosity with which he was able to put himself at the service of others, always ready to listen, advise and dialogue with anyone who ever asked him for an opinion or an exchange of ideas. His example, his far-sighted vision, and his sincere, passionate and selfless spirit will continue to accompany and inspire the Italian and international geothermal community, guiding it with the same strength with which he was able to do for more than half a century.
